The “Marubi” National Museum of Photography in Shkodra has been added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, highlighting its significance as a key heritage site and cultural destination in northern Albania.
Albania’s Minister of Economy, Culture and Innovation, Blendi Gonxhja, shared the news on social media Monday, noting the museum’s growing popularity among local and international visitors.
“Marubi, a favorite destination for visitors, now part of the UNESCO International Register, Memory of the World!” Gonxhja wrote, alongside an image of the museum.
The museum houses the extensive archive of negatives, documents, and photography equipment belonging to the Marubi dynasty, founded by Italian-born photographer Pietro Marubi and continued by his successor, Kel Marubi. The collection offers a visual chronicle of Albanian society from the late 19th to mid-20th century.
The Memory of the World program, established by UNESCO in 1992, seeks to safeguard documentary heritage of global significance, ensuring its preservation and wider accessibility. The inclusion of Marubi’s archive places Albania on the map of countries contributing to the collective memory of humanity.
