British Defense Secretary John Healey said two missiles launched by Iran toward Cyprus on Sunday were successfully intercepted.

Speaking to Sky News, Healey said the missiles were not believed to be targeting Cyprus, but the incident highlights the growing regional threat posed by Iran.

“We do not believe that they were targeting Cyprus, but nevertheless, this incident shows how real and increasing the threat from a regime that attacks widely across the region is, and this requires us to take action,” he said.

He did not provide details on the timing of the launches or the interception system used.

Senior government sources in Cyprus told Kathimerini that no damage occurred and the situation remains under control, but they expect the region to stay on heightened alert for at least a month.

Cyprus hosts key British military facilities and is considered strategically significant amid rising regional tensions.
