A 19-year-old hiker died after slipping and falling into a ravine while descending Slovenia’s Mount Triglav, the country’s highest peak, local media reported on Tuesday.
The teenager was returning from the Kredarica mountain hut towards the Vrata Valley when he fell near the beginning of the Tominšek trail, according to Slovenian newspaper Dnevnik.
He suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Slovenian military helicopter transported his body from the mountain before returning to evacuate the other hikers who had been climbing with him.
The helicopter mountain-rescue team deployed from Brnik included a police officer from Slovenia’s mountain-police unit, who examined the scene.
Mountain rescuers from Mojstrana also took part in the operation.
Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest mountain at 2,864 metres, is located in the Julian Alps and attracts large numbers of climbers and hikers during the summer season.
