Greece welcomed the memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and Iran in Islamabad, calling it an important opportunity to restore regional balance and strengthen the global economy.

Greek Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lana Zohiou described the agreement as a “particularly important diplomatic achievement” during a regular press briefing.

“This represents a significant opportunity to restore regional equilibrium and reinforce the global economy,” Zohiou said.

She added that the next step would be to finalize negotiations on the individual components of the agreement and ensure its swift, full and effective implementation.

According to Athens, the primary concern remains the unconditional restoration of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime routes for energy shipments.

“The main priority is the unconditional restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as continued efforts to establish sustainable peace, security and regional stability,” Zohiou said.

Asked whether Greece was prepared to participate directly in implementing the agreement, including the possible deployment of naval assets, Zohiou said Athens supports the French-British maritime security initiative and seeks to play an active role in it.

She emphasized that any such mission would have a strictly defensive mandate focused on safeguarding freedom of navigation and would be activated only when conditions permit and in full coordination with all parties involved.

Operational matters, she noted, fall under the responsibility of Greece’s Ministry of National Defence.
