A five-year-old girl has died after a car veered off the road and struck a family walking on a pavement in the Serbian city of Kraljevo, local media reported.
The crash occurred at about 7 p.m. on Monday on Četvrti Kraljevački Bataljon Street. Security-camera footage reportedly captured the moment the vehicle mounted the pavement and struck a mother and her two children.
According to preliminary information, the 26-year-old driver of a Seat was attempting to overtake another vehicle when he collided with a Volkswagen approaching from the opposite direction. His car then left the road, struck a tree and hit the pedestrians.
The five-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries and was transferred from Kraljevo to the University Children’s Hospital in Belgrade, where she died on Tuesday.
Her younger sibling was also taken to Belgrade with serious injuries to the head and limbs. Their 32-year-old mother is receiving treatment for severe injuries at the Studenica General Hospital in Kraljevo.
The children’s 35-year-old father and a 33-year-old passenger in the Seat sustained minor injuries.
Serbian police arrested the suspected driver, identified by the initials J.A., on suspicion of committing a serious criminal offence against public-traffic safety.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
