Italian police arrested a 29-year-old tourist from Bosnia and Herzegovina after he allegedly threatened passersby with a handgun and a knife in central Rome.

The incident caused panic near the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia, according to Italian media reports. Tourists alerted the authorities, and the suspect allegedly resisted arrest and attempted to flee.

Police later searched his hotel room and found additional ammunition for the handgun, which was already loaded with 12 rounds, the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported.

Officers also reportedly discovered psychoactive substances, including ketamine and hashish, in the room.

The 29-year-old had been staying at the Rome hotel with his 30-year-old girlfriend, a Croatian national.
