Türkiye and Georgia’s partnership is helping maintain peace in the region, President Tayyip Erdoğan said on Tuesday, as he and Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili pledged to deepen cooperation on security, development and regional issues.

Speaking after talks in Ankara, Erdoğan said the two leaders discussed the war in Ukraine, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and other regional developments. He said existing trilateral mechanisms between the two countries and their partners had supported stability, and announced plans for a meeting of the three nations’ parliamentary speakers once legislatures reconvene.

Erdoğan reaffirmed Türkiye’s backing for the “dignified and safe” return of Ahıska Turks to their homeland, promising continued assistance.

Kavelashvili’s visit to Ankara was his first since taking office in December 2024.

Türkiye and Georgia have described their relationship as a strategic partnership underpinned by political, economic and regional ties. Türkiye recognised Georgia’s independence in 1991 and the two established diplomatic relations the following year. Both maintain embassies in each other’s capitals, with Türkiye also operating a consulate in Batumi and Georgia having consulates in Istanbul and Trabzon.

Relations have been strengthened in recent years through high-level visits, joint infrastructure projects and aligned positions on regional security. Türkiye also participates in the Türkiye-Georgia-Azerbaijan trilateral mechanism launched in 2014, and a Türkiye-Georgia-Azerbaijan-Iran format started in 2018, which Ankara says promotes peace and prosperity.
