Syria has formally recognised Kosovo’s independence, becoming the 120th country to do so, in a diplomatic breakthrough facilitated by Saudi Arabia, officials in Pristina said on Wednesday.

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani said the decision marked a “historic moment” in relations between the two states, expressing “deep gratitude” to Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa for what she described as his leadership and support for the people of Kosovo.

“This truly is a decision of historic significance between the two states, based on mutual respect for the long struggle for freedom, mutual recognition of sovereignty, territorial integrity and commitment to bilateral cooperation,” Osmani said in a statement issued from Riyadh.

She also thanked Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman for mediating the agreement. “His leadership and guidance have made the results of our trilateral meeting a historic one for both the people of Kosovo and the people of Syria,” she said.

Kosovo, a former Serbian province that declared independence in 2008, has been recognised by most Western nations but remains opposed by Serbia, Russia, China and several other countries. The recognition by Syria marks a rare development, as Damascus had previously aligned with Serbia’s position and was one of several countries that did not acknowledge Kosovo’s statehood.

Caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti called the announcement “great news,” noting that Kosovo is now recognised by 120 countries.

“We extend our gratitude to President Osmani for her successful efforts and to everyone involved,” Kurti said. “We look forward to strengthening ties as the country enters a new and crucial chapter in its history.”

Kurti also thanked Syria’s President al-Sharaa and Saudi Arabia for their “contribution to this shared diplomatic success,” writing on social media: “Every day, the Republic of Kosovo grows stronger and more respected on the world stage. Shukran jazīlan, Sūriyā!”

The recognition was announced following meetings in Riyadh between Kosovo’s and Syrian representatives under Saudi mediation. It marks a symbolic step toward expanding Kosovo’s international legitimacy, particularly among Middle Eastern and non-aligned countries, where it has long sought broader recognition.

Saudi Arabia recognised Kosovo in 2009 and has since supported its diplomatic outreach in the Islamic world.
