The Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Center will allow employees to return to work following a review of current security assessments and protective measures, officials said on Monday.
The decision was made after consultations with relevant institutions and the Office of the High Representative (OHR), the Memorial Center’s director Emir Suljagić said in a statement.
“During the meeting, we analyzed the current situation and all relevant information, including security assurances from competent institutions, protection measures implemented by the Directorate for Coordination of Police Bodies of Bosnia and Herzegovina (DKPT BiH) and the EUFOR mission, as well as feedback from our employees and associates,” Suljagić said.
Additional security measures will include an increased presence of DKPT BiH officers, enhanced monitoring around the Memorial Center, additional technical protection measures, controlled access for visitors and staff, and close cooperation with EUFOR.
“My primary responsibility, both legally and morally, is to the people who work at the Memorial Center and the community in which they live. It must be clear that we are resuming work under extraordinary conditions and a special security regime,” Suljagić said, adding that joint and collective visits would remain suspended due to the ongoing security situation.
Suljagić thanked DKPT BiH Director, Chief General Inspector of Police Enes Karić, for the measures taken, describing DKPT’s role as crucial to the Center’s operations. He also noted that the High Representative had expressed readiness to take any necessary measures to ensure the institution’s continued work.
The Srebrenica Memorial Center, dedicated to preserving the memory of the 1995 genocide, will continue to operate under heightened security while striving to maintain its mission.
“Our friends and allies continue to stand with us and closely monitor developments. Once we assess the situation this week, we will aim to reopen the institution for collective visits before the end of the month,” Suljagić said.
