Greek health authorities are investigating a salmonella outbreak that has hospitalised 17 people in the city of Lamia after they consumed ready-made meals, most of them containing chicken.
According to officials, the patients include an 8-year-old child and his father, while most of those hospitalised are under the age of 31. Authorities warned that more cases could emerge because salmonella symptoms may appear several days after consuming contaminated food.
Investigators have identified a suspected poultry supplier and are tracing the entire supply chain, from distributors to the farm where the chickens were raised. Laboratory tests are underway to determine the exact source of contamination.
Health officials have advised the public to avoid consuming chicken from the affected supply chain until the investigation is completed and urged consumers to follow proper food safety practices during the summer months, when high temperatures increase the risk of food-borne illnesses.
