The role of Romania’s F-16 Training Center in boosting air defense capabilities and pilot training for Romania, allied states, and partners including Ukraine was underscored on Monday during the 29th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, the Romanian Ministry of National Defense said.
Defense Minister Ionuț Moșteanu participated in the meeting, held in virtual format, which was co-chaired by UK Defence Secretary John Healey and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte also took part.
“Romania reaffirms its unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, in line with international law and the rules-based international order,” Moșteanu said, according to a ministry statement sent to AGERPRES.
The statement noted Romania’s significant contributions to international efforts to support Ukraine, including the training of Ukrainian military personnel under the EU’s EUMAM UA mission and the UK-led INTERFLEX initiative.
The F-16 Training Center, located in Romania, was highlighted as a key asset in increasing interoperability and strengthening NATO’s air defense posture on its eastern flank. The center provides pilot training not only for Romanian forces but also for NATO allies and partners, including Ukraine.
“Romania remains committed to supporting Ukraine and defending the values that underpin European security. Together with our partners, we will continue our contributions for as long as necessary,” Moșteanu said.
The ministry added that the meeting served as an important opportunity to enhance coordination with strategic partners and deliver effective support to Ukraine through technical assistance, training, and equipment.
“The Contact Group for Ukraine continues to serve as a vital platform for international dialogue and coordination aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities and promoting regional stability amid ongoing security challenges,” the statement concluded.
