A protest began today in Ruma against yesterday’s counter-rally organized by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). Demonstrators announced they would march on foot to Sremska Mitrovica as part of an action called “Airing Out the City.”
According to reports from N1, tens of thousands of citizens took to the streets of Kragujevac yesterday for the gathering “Let’s Meet on Sretenje.” The protest, which lasted 15 hours, was held in memory of the 15 people who lost their lives when a roof structure collapsed on November 1 last year.
Students who arrived in Kragujevac from various cities across Serbia—including Užice, Čačak, Kraljevo, Novi Pazar, Belgrade, and Niš—are preparing to return to their universities today, where they will continue their blockades.
Meanwhile, taxi drivers from several cities have organized transport to pick up students from Kragujevac and take them back to their university centers.
While the student protest was taking place in Kragujevac, a rally was held by the ruling SNS in Sremska Mitrovica. The two events left completely different impressions—one as an expression of public discontent, the other as a party gathering of government supporters.
Photos and videos from both cities are circulating on social media, showing two contrasting realities in Serbia.
