One woman was killed and 40 people were injured after a passenger bus overturned in Turkey’s central province of Kirikkale on Monday, authorities said.
The bus, operated by Suha Turizm, was travelling from Tekirdag to Kayseri when the driver lost control near Karakecili State Hospital on the Kaman–Ankara highway, according to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency.
Emergency responders from Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), along with firefighters, medical teams, gendarmerie officers and police, were dispatched to the scene to rescue passengers and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
A total of 41 people were involved in the accident. Three passengers sustained critical injuries, while one of the injured, identified as Tekmile Atasoy, later died in hospital.
Kirikkale Governor Huseyin Engin Saribrahim said preliminary findings indicated that the driver lost control because of a slippery road surface caused by early morning frost.
“The injured have been transferred to hospitals, and three remain in critical condition. The road was slippery due to frost, which appears to have been the main cause of the accident,” the governor said.
Authorities said the bus driver has been detained pending investigation as police work to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
