In the wake of the devastating nightclub fire in Kočani that claimed 59 lives, North Macedonia’s Ministry of Education and Science has urged local authorities to ensure that every school develops a comprehensive emergency response plan.
The fire, which occurred on March 16 at the Pulse nightclub during a pop concert, was reportedly sparked by indoor pyrotechnics and rapidly engulfed the venue, highlighting severe shortcomings in safety protocols. This tragedy has intensified public scrutiny over safety measures in public spaces, including educational institutions.
The Ministry emphasized that these emergency response plans should detail actions for students, teachers, and staff to take before, during, and after emergency events. Municipalities are also advised to implement national disaster risk assessments and adhere to fire safety guidelines approved by the Protection and Rescue Directorate. This initiative aligns with the country’s decentralization process, which assigns municipalities the responsibility for the safety of elementary and high school buildings within their jurisdictions.
Schools lacking safety guidelines are instructed to take immediate steps to safeguard students on their premises. Additionally, the Ministry stressed the importance of schools possessing and regularly maintaining safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers and hydrants. Starting Monday, the State Education Inspectorate will commence inspections to ensure compliance with these safety standards.
