Romania scrambled two F-16 fighter jets and deployed a military helicopter on Monday after radar systems detected a suspected drone near the country’s border with Moldova, the Defence Ministry said.

The radar surveillance system initially registered intermittent aerial signals at around 6 a.m. in Moldova’s Cahul region. One of the signals was later detected near Târgu Bujor in Romania’s eastern Galați county.

Two Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jets and an IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter took off from the Borcea Air Base to monitor the situation.

The Defence Ministry said the aerial object detected near Târgu Bujor was identified as a drone. Military personnel continued monitoring the airspace and the surrounding area.

No injuries or property damage were reported.

The incident comes amid increased surveillance along Romania’s borders with Ukraine and Moldova as Russia continues launching drone attacks against Ukrainian targets.

Romanian authorities have reported several previous incursions or suspected aerial violations, while fragments believed to have come from Russian drones have repeatedly been discovered near the Ukrainian border.
