The political movement Evropa sad (PES) has called on the Montenegrin government to reconsider a “controversial decision” made by former Prime Minister Dritan Abazović regarding the granting of Montenegrin citizenship to Kosovo businessman Naser Ramaj.

According to unofficial sources from the RTCG portal, PES intends to initiate a review of other honorary citizenships, particularly those granted to investors who have failed to meet their obligations or who have been involved in legal disputes. Among the disputed cases are several individuals who received privileged or honorary status under the administrations of former Presidents Milo Đukanović, Prime Minister Duško Marković, and Abazović.

In light of the confirmed indictment against Ramaj, who was granted citizenship during Abazović’s tenure, PES has stated that the government should reassess the controversial decision. The indictment relates to allegations of tax evasion and non-payment of contributions amounting to €2.24 million.

“The government must urgently review all circumstances surrounding the decision to grant Ramaj citizenship, due to the damage to the credibility of the institution responsible for granting Montenegrin nationality, and to maintain public trust in state decisions,” PES stated in a press release.

The movement also called on relevant authorities to investigate any potential procedural flaws in granting Ramaj citizenship.

“If any irregularities are confirmed, the authorities should take all necessary actions to prevent further harm to the interests of the Montenegrin state as a result of Abazović’s government decisions,” PES concluded.
