The number of applicants for voluntary military training in Croatia doubled in 2024 compared to the previous year, with nearly 300 individuals enlisting, the Ministry of Defence said on Thursday, Hina reports.

A total of 298 recruits – 254 men and 44 women – have begun training, marking their first step towards a potential military career. Among them are six top athletes who will follow an accelerated training programme adapted to their professional commitments, the ministry said.

The latest training cycle for the 45th generation of recruits has commenced at a facility under the Croatian Army’s Training and Doctrine Command in Požega.

The ministry attributed the increase in interest to improved working conditions and greater benefits for Croatian soldiers.

“In 2024, salaries for active-duty military personnel increased by an average of 30%, daily allowances for participation in operations and international activities were raised, and the monthly allowance for voluntary military training rose from €700 to €900,” the ministry said.

The first training cycle of the year lasts 40 working days and will conclude on April 9. Top athletes undergoing military training will complete the initial 12 days in Požega before continuing the remaining 28 days at their respective sports clubs.
