Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis on Tuesday underscored the UN Security Council’s historic responsibility to maintain international peace and security, as the council convened to discuss the situation in Ukraine following the ratification of a UN draft resolution.
Amid mounting global crises, Gerapetritis reiterated Greece’s unwavering commitment to international law and respect for treaties defining international borders.
“Greece condemns any violation of international peace and security through military aggression,” Gerapetritis said, reaffirming Athens’ clear stance on Ukraine since the outset of the war. “We need peace. The war must stop. We all agree on this. And we commend all efforts in this direction,” he added.
The minister expressed concern over the absence of references to international law and the UN Charter in recent Security Council resolutions. He questioned why proposed amendments from European member states—calling for an immediate end to the conflict and a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace—were not adopted.
“It is inconceivable to disagree on fundamental principles such as sovereign equality and territorial integrity of states,” Gerapetritis said.
