Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday urged Europe to awaken from what he described as a prolonged period of geopolitical and economic lethargy, stressing the need for swift and decisive action in response to evolving global challenges.
“I have spoken many times about the need for Europe to wake up from the geopolitical and economic lethargy in which, unfortunately, it has been for some time,” Mitsotakis said in an interview at the conclusion of the Thessaloniki Summit 2025, organized by the Federation of Industries of Greece (SVE) and the Delphi Economic Forum.
“Recent developments and this different view of things from the United States oblige us not only to look the truth in the face but also to move with a very high speed and to implement decisions that we have been discussing for a long time,” he added.
Mitsotakis joined the Thessaloniki Summit shortly after participating via teleconference in the European Leaders for Ukraine summit convened by French President Emmanuel Macron.
He noted that the upcoming European Council meeting would be pivotal for the bloc.
“The forthcoming European Council will be one of the most crucial, because there we will be called upon to ratify, to formulate decisions that will allow us, at last, to face up to these challenges and not have the European Union be a bystander,” Mitsotakis said.
