The death toll from a wildfire that swept through the village of Liti, near Thessaloniki, has risen to two after authorities discovered a second body late on Monday night, believed to be that of a 12-year-old child who had been reported missing.

According to the Greek Fire Service, the body of an unidentified person was found inside a house located in a forested area near the village of Liti, in the municipality of Oreokastro, northwest of Thessaloniki.

Earlier during firefighting operations, authorities had recovered the body of an adult man near the same house, while a woman suffering from burns was rescued and transported to hospital.

The wildfire broke out shortly before 3 p.m. on Monday, initially burning low vegetation before strong winds rapidly spread the flames into nearby forest areas and residential zones.

Greek authorities activated the emergency alert system 112, urging residents of Liti to evacuate to the local stadium as firefighters battled the advancing flames.

By Tuesday morning, officials said there were no active fire fronts remaining, although investigations continue to formally identify the second victim and assess the extent of the damage caused by the blaze.

The incident adds to growing concerns over increasingly severe wildfire seasons across southern Europe, where extreme heat and strong winds have heightened the risk of devastating fires.
