SOFIA, May 27 (BV)— Borislav Sarafov has resigned as head of Bulgaria’s National Investigation Service and as deputy prosecutor general overseeing investigations, Bulgarian National Television reported on Tuesday.
The resignation is expected to be formally presented as an extraordinary item during a meeting of the Prosecutorial College later in the day.
Sarafov has been among the most powerful and controversial figures in Bulgaria’s judicial system in recent years, serving in senior prosecutorial positions during a period marked by political disputes over corruption, accountability and judicial reform.
The move comes amid continued public and political pressure over the functioning of Bulgaria’s prosecution system and broader debates about the independence and transparency of judicial institutions.
Sarafov previously returned to the post of director of the National Investigation Service after serving as acting prosecutor general.
His resignation could trigger a new reshuffle inside Bulgaria’s prosecution hierarchy at a sensitive political moment for the country.
The Bulgarian judiciary has faced repeated criticism from European institutions, civil society groups and opposition parties over allegations of political influence, lack of accountability and slow progress on anti-corruption reforms.
The Prosecutorial College is expected to discuss the resignation during its regular session scheduled for 11 a.m. local time.
No immediate explanation for the resignation was officially announced.
