Strengthening Europe’s defence industry is crucial for both regional security and Bulgaria’s economic growth, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said on Friday during a visit to the Arsenal weapons manufacturer.
“Boosting defence industry capacity is extremely important for Europe—not just to safeguard its rights, freedoms, and values, but also for Bulgaria, which has the potential to expand its markets and enhance its own defence capabilities,” Zhelyazkov told reporters.
The prime minister visited state-owned VMZ-Sopot and Arsenal in Kazanlak to assess production capabilities. “I am extremely impressed by what I have seen—there are many opportunities based on the European Industrial Defence Strategy and upcoming financing for European manufacturers,” he said.
Zhelyazkov emphasized the need for Bulgaria’s defence industry to remain adaptable to evolving military technologies. “Different types of warfare require different technologies. Our industry must be flexible, capable of increasing production and diversifying products. This is best achieved with an uninterrupted supply chain and domestic production of key materials,” he said.
Bulgaria has around 30 high-tech defence enterprises, which should work together to maximize their potential, he added. He also announced plans to establish a defence innovation centre.
Addressing comments from former U.S. President Donald Trump that NATO allies must meet their defence spending commitments, Zhelyazkov said collective responsibility is essential for alliance security. “I believe Bulgaria will maintain its commitments as an ally, increasing its defence spending as a percentage of GDP,” he said, adding that countries should leverage their strategic advantages within the alliance framework.
