Albania’s Special Court for Corruption and Organised Crime is investigating 18 criminal cases related to the upcoming May 11 local elections, the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK) said on Monday.
The figure was disclosed in response to a formal request for information submitted by the opposition Democratic Party, covering the period from January to the present.
According to SPAK, five of the 18 investigations were launched proactively by prosecutors, without external complaints.
As campaigning intensifies ahead of the vote, SPAK has begun probing alleged electoral crimes within its jurisdiction. The office said the investigations target not only formal complaints but also the potential misuse of public administration and infrastructure during the election campaign.
Under its public strategy, SPAK has deployed 20 special prosecutors, 60 investigators from the National Bureau of Investigation (BKH), and 20 financial investigators across Albania’s 12 regions to monitor and pursue suspected violations.
