The Novi Sad committee of the opposition Free Citizens’ Movement (PSG) accused police on Tuesday of attacking citizens after a commemoration late on Monday marking ten months since a roof collapse at the city’s railway station.
In a statement, PSG said the incident occurred near the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education, where citizens had gathered to support students. The party alleged that police used stun grenades against demonstrators “without any reason.”
“By doing so, the police trampled on the autonomy of the university and clearly sided with the regime,” PSG said.
The group called for the resignation of Interior Minister Ivica Dačić and Novi Sad police chief Nevenko Marić, holding them directly responsible for what it described as violence against citizens.
“The police have been turned into a praetorian guard that serves the regime of Aleksandar Vučić rather than the citizens of Serbia,” PSG said.
Serbia’s interior ministry and police have not immediately responded to a Reuters request for comment.
