The Romanian Embassy in Washington is hosting a week of events from July 7 to 13 to mark the anniversary of the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the United States, now in its 27th year, the embassy said in a statement on Monday.

“This week, in Washington, we celebrate the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the United States of America – an essential pillar of Romanian foreign policy and a guarantee of security, prosperity and democracy in the region,” Romanian Ambassador Andrei Muraru said. “The events we are organizing reflect the joint commitment to strengthening our bilateral relationship and promoting the values that unite us.”

The partnership, launched on July 11, 1997, during a visit to Bucharest by then-U.S. President Bill Clinton, has become a cornerstone of Romania’s foreign policy and a key element of its Euro-Atlantic integration. In 2023, July 11 was officially designated Romania–U.S. Friendship Day.

As part of this year’s celebrations, Ambassador Muraru will attend a working lunch on July 8 with representatives of American companies and the U.S. federal government to promote economic ties.

On July 10, the embassy will host the second annual reception commemorating Romania–U.S. Friendship Day, with attendees including members of the U.S. administration, Congress, the diplomatic corps, business leaders, think-tanks, and representatives of the Romanian-American community.

On July 11, the Heritage Foundation will host a debate on the future of the Strategic Partnership, focusing on security, defence, and expanding cooperation in energy, trade, and business, with particular attention to Romania’s role in the Black Sea region.

The week concludes with the fourth edition of the “Romanian Weekend at The Wharf” festival, held July 11–13 on Washington’s waterfront. The event will feature traditional dance and music performances, craft demonstrations, interactive workshops, tourism showcases, and Romanian food and wine tastings. The festival is the largest Romanian cultural event in the United States, attracting both Romanian-Americans and American visitors.
