A Bulgarian court sentenced the son of a prosecutor to four years in prison on Thursday after finding him guilty of multiple assaults and acts of hooliganism.

The Sofia District Court handed down the sentence to Vasil Mihaylov, whose case has drawn public attention due to his family ties and a string of violent incidents in the town of Pernik.

Prosecutors had sought a sentence of 11 years and 11 months. Mihaylov was convicted on several counts, with individual sentences ranging from six months to three years and three months. The court ultimately imposed a combined sentence of three years and three months, then extended it by an additional nine months, bringing the total to four years.

The amount of time Mihaylov will actually serve will depend on the final ruling after appeals and will take into account time already spent in pre-trial detention.

Mihaylov, who remains free under a supervised release order, declined to comment following the verdict. The prosecution has announced it will appeal the ruling.
