The lionfish, an invasive species known for its venomous spines, is being spotted with increasing frequency in the Adriatic Sea, prompting warnings from experts about potential risks to both marine ecosystems and public safety.

The species was recently filmed off the coast of Montenegro, while another specimen was caught just a few meters from a beach crowded with swimmers. Lionfish have also been recorded along Croatia’s coastline, suggesting that the species is gradually expanding throughout the Adriatic.

Although lionfish typically inhabit deeper waters near the seabed, experts caution that their growing presence in popular tourist areas requires increased vigilance.

A sting from a lionfish can cause severe pain, swelling, muscle cramps, excessive sweating and breathing difficulties. Specialists advise that anyone stung should immediately immerse the affected area in hot water and seek medical attention as quickly as possible.

Native to the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, the lionfish is believed to have entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. Due to its rapid reproduction and harmful impact on native marine species, it is considered one of the most problematic invasive species in the region.

Scientists are urging divers, fishermen and members of the public to report any new sightings of lionfish to the relevant authorities in order to monitor and manage its spread across the Adriatic Sea.
