A growing U.S. military presence in Greece points to a broader strategic shift in the Eastern Mediterranean, as Washington seeks to reduce reliance on Turkey, according to an analysis by Greek Reporter.

The analysis says the Pentagon has been steadily expanding its footprint in Greece, upgrading key facilities such as the Souda Bay naval base on Crete and the port of Alexandroupolis, while increasing deployments of air and surveillance assets.

For decades, Turkey was considered a central pillar of U.S. and NATO strategy due to its location and infrastructure, including the Incirlik Air Base, which supported operations from the Cold War to more recent conflicts.

However, Greek Reporter says relations between Washington and Ankara have deteriorated in recent years, citing disputes over Turkey’s acquisition of Russian S-400 missile systems and broader geopolitical differences.

In response, the United States has sought alternative regional hubs, with Greece emerging as a key partner. The analysis highlights Alexandroupolis as a logistical gateway for moving military equipment into Eastern Europe, bypassing the Turkish straits, while Souda Bay has been expanded to support large-scale naval operations.

The report also notes increased U.S. drone deployments in Greece and Athens’ plans to acquire F-35 fighter jets, steps that deepen military cooperation between the two countries.

Beyond defense, the shift has implications for energy security, with infrastructure in Greece supporting the flow of liquefied natural gas into Europe, potentially reducing dependence on Russian supplies, the analysis says.

Greek Reporter concludes that while Turkey remains a significant regional actor, Greece is increasingly positioned as a stable and reliable partner for U.S. strategic operations in a volatile region.
