BELGRADE, July 7 (BV) – Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Tuesday that Serbia should continue moving quickly on its European path, even though he does not expect the European Union to make major enlargement decisions in the next few years.
Speaking at a conference of parliament speakers from EU candidate countries in Belgrade, Vucic said cooperation among candidate states was important as they seek to advance their accession processes.
He said Serbia wanted strong cooperation with Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine, both bilaterally and in the context of their shared European ambitions.
Vucic said Serbia had learned in recent years to develop in difficult circumstances and to build its economy through partnerships with countries beyond the EU. But he said the European path remained the country’s best option.
“We have learned to live on our own, to grow faster and to progress,” Vucic said. “But we still have no path that could be more successful or better than the European path.”
His remarks come as EU enlargement remains a central issue for candidate countries in the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe, with many governments urging Brussels to accelerate the process amid geopolitical tensions.
