Turkey and Spain have signed a 2.6 billion euro ($3.06 billion) agreement for Spain to procure 30 HURJET light training jets from Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), Turkey’s defence industry authority said on Tuesday.
Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2028 and continue through 2036, marking the first foreign sale of the HURJET aircraft, the authority said in a statement.
TAI and Airbus reached a cooperation agreement in July as part of the negotiations leading up to the deal, which the Turkish authorities said would deepen defence industry cooperation between NATO allies Turkey and Spain.
“This agreement represents a high value-added and multi-dimensional defence export package,” Haluk Gorgun, head of Turkey’s Defence Industry Authority, said.
He said the contract includes not only aircraft deliveries but also an integrated training system, maintenance infrastructure and long-term operational support.
The deal comes as Turkey accelerates efforts to expand its domestic defence industry and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. Ankara is currently developing its first indigenous fighter jet, KAAN, as well as a layered air defence system known as the “Steel Dome”.
Turkey has also emerged in recent years as a leading global producer and exporter of military drones.
