The Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF) has been granted Oscar-qualifying status in the feature documentary category, organisers announced on Monday.

Since 2019, winners of the festival’s short film category have automatically qualified for Oscar nomination consideration. That privilege has now been extended to recipients of the Heart of Sarajevo Award for Best Feature Documentary.

Under the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision, winners of the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Documentary Film, the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Short Film, and the European Film Academy’s Best Short Film nominee will all be eligible for Oscar nomination consideration, provided they meet the Academy’s additional criteria.

The recognition further cements the Sarajevo Film Festival’s reputation as a leading event in the international film industry, offering award-winning films a direct path to Hollywood’s most prestigious accolades.

The Sarajevo Film Festival is scheduled to take place from August 15 to 22.
