EU enlargement is a strategic investment in Europe’s security and an expansion of the “zone of peace,” Bulgarian lawmaker Denitsa Sacheva said on Thursday.
Sacheva, deputy chair of the GERB-SDF parliamentary group, made the remarks during the Interparliamentary Conference on Foreign, Security and Defence Policy in Copenhagen.
“As a member state of Southeast Europe and the Black Sea region, Bulgaria consistently supports the European future of the Western Balkans and the Eastern Neighbourhood,” she wrote on Facebook after the event, citing novini.bg.
She said the accession process should be based on merit, fulfilment of membership criteria and commitments by candidate states.
“We must clearly define our common European interests in the areas of security and competitiveness and explain them to as many people as possible in the EU and the countries that want to become part of it,” she added.
