Members of the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs, specifically from the Border Police Directorate, have conducted an operation with increased security measures to control the movement of migrants in the area between the town of Šid and the state border with Croatia.

This area is often known as a route used by illegal migrants to cross illegally into the European Union, and is therefore under constant surveillance by border authorities.

During this operation, the police forces faced armed resistance from an illegal camp located in the forest, near the border. Fire was opened from this camp towards the police officers, who reacted immediately and were forced to use their weapons in self-defense. As a result of the armed clash, one of the attackers was killed on the spot, while four other people were arrested and neutralized by the police forces.

.As part of this operation, after a thorough search of the surrounding area, an improvised camp was discovered, where irregular migrants were staying. According to the information portal nova.rs, this camp was built in unsuitable conditions and hidden in a wooded area, with the aim of evading the authorities.

While taking legal measures and actions to dismantle this camp and detain the persons involved, the migrants opened fire on the police, seriously endangering the lives of the security forces. Due to the exchange of fire, one illegal migrant lost his life. Four others were detained at the scene, while several others managed to flee in an unknown direction and are currently being sought by the authorities.

The official announcement of the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs states that all investigative actions are being taken to fully clarify the incident. Investigators from the Sremska Mitrovica Police Directorate are at the scene, as well as the responsible prosecutor from the High Public Prosecutor’s Office, who is leading the investigation process to determine in detail all the circumstances that led to this armed clash.

Serbian authorities have stressed that the situation at the border remains tense due to the large influx of migrants trying to cross illegally towards European Union countries, and that such operations will continue to guarantee order, security and protection of state borders. /Telegraph/
