Police in North Macedonia are searching for a suspected gunman who fled the scene after shooting a fellow student in a café in the eastern city of Shtip late Wednesday, authorities said.
Surveillance footage published by local outlet TV Star appears to show the suspect entering the café restroom, emerging minutes later and firing at another man, believed to be a fellow Turkish student. The victim was taken to a hospital in Shtip in critical condition.
Unofficial reports suggest both the suspect and the victim are Turkish nationals studying in North Macedonia.
The suspect fled the scene in a BMW and was later spotted at the Miladinovci toll station, near the capital Skopje. Police signaled for the vehicle to stop, but the driver reportedly broke through the toll gate. Officers opened fire but failed to stop the suspect.
The abandoned and damaged BMW was later found near an industrial zone close to Miladinovci. As of Thursday morning, the suspect remained at large.
Police have not confirmed the identity of the gunman and said investigations are ongoing. Authorities are expected to release further details later in the day.
