Croatian Prime Minister and ruling HDZ party leader Andrej Plenković said on Tuesday that the recent escalation of conflict in the Middle East could significantly impact global energy markets and foreshadowed a “tough” electoral campaign for the country in the coming two years.
Speaking at an event marking the 36th anniversary of the HDZ in Varaždin County, Plenković highlighted the combined U.S. and Israeli military operations against Iran, noting that rising oil prices were already visible across global markets.
“The joint actions of Israel and the United States in Iran, which began this past Saturday, are reshaping the world’s energy landscape. Oil prices have surged across all markets,” Plenković said. He added that while immediate effects on Croatia might be limited, further escalation could have unavoidable consequences.
Plenković stressed Europe’s heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels, noting Croatia’s strategic role due to its liquefied natural gas terminal on Krk island and the oil terminal in Omišalj, which contribute to energy security not only domestically but also for Central and Eastern Europe.
“In these circumstances, we will continue to advocate with our European partners and allies for peace and security, strengthening our defense capabilities, internal security, and managing migration, while enhancing Croatia’s position within the core of the European Union,” Plenković said.
The Prime Minister also discussed Croatia’s international standing, citing the country’s recent entry into the Schengen Area and the eurozone, and announced plans to complete OECD accession this year. He highlighted that Croatia’s GDP grew 3.2% in 2025, above the EU average.
Turning to domestic politics, Plenković criticized opposition parties for focusing on ideological divisions rather than practical solutions to key issues. He urged HDZ members to prepare for an intensive election campaign over the next two years.
“The political frustration we expect will make the 2024 elections look like child’s play. The campaign will be far more intense and demand greater effort from us and our partners,” he said.
Anđelko Stričak, president of HDZ Varaždin County and county prefect, emphasized ongoing investment initiatives exceeding €1 billion in the region, covering education, healthcare, and infrastructure projects. He also announced plans to nominate Plenković as an honorary citizen of Varaždin County.
