North Macedonia’s Minister for European Affairs, Orhan Murtezani, told parliament on Monday that the country’s reform agenda goes beyond meeting European Union membership criteria, calling it a shared ambition to build a more just, productive and transparent society.
Speaking during a parliamentary debate titled “Accelerating Integration: Benefits of the Reform Agenda for Institutional Strengthening and EU Alignment,” Murtezani underlined the strategic importance of the 2024–2027 reform plan and the role of parliament in delivering tangible progress.
“Our future in Europe is not an abstract goal on the distant horizon; it is a reality we are building day by day through our joint commitment,” Murtezani said. “This agenda is not drafted for Brussels or EU institutions alone, but primarily for the citizens we represent.”
The minister emphasized that the reform plan focuses on good governance, rule of law, economic resilience, green and digital transformation, and human capital development. He said these reforms directly address citizens’ daily challenges, from inefficient public services and corruption to unemployment and environmental issues.
He stressed that strengthening the rule of law is central to the agenda, noting recent legislative initiatives such as the Law on Internal Financial Control and enhanced transparency in public procurement.
“Reforms are not just about laws; they require leadership, courage, and accountability,” Murtezani said, urging lawmakers to support public administration reform and full implementation of the new budget law to improve institutional efficiency.
He also highlighted the practical benefits of the green and digital transitions, linking them to cleaner air, lower bills, better online services, and greater cybersecurity.
Education reform and vocational training tailored to market needs are key to empowering youth, he said, with digitalisation of education aimed at building a flexible and competitive workforce.
Murtezani reiterated that around EUR 750 million are available to North Macedonia through the EU’s Reform and Growth Instrument. “These funds are not merely financial tools, but a sign of the EU’s trust in our readiness and ability to succeed,” he said.
He concluded by calling on MPs to play a decisive role through legislative action and oversight: “Your support will determine the pace and success of our EU integration. Let us not just follow European standards but embody the European idea itself.”
