North Macedonia has no plans to send troops to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping mission, citing regional security concerns as a NATO member, the Foreign Ministry said.
Officials also stated that a decision is yet to be made on whether to continue military aid to Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s invasion.
Focus on Regional Stability
North Macedonia’s position is that Russia has committed military aggression against Ukraine. However, the government believes it is time to prioritize diplomacy and peace efforts, supporting initiatives aimed at ending the conflict.
“The country’s foreign policy direction remains clear – strategic partnership with the U.S., NATO membership, and full EU accession,” a Foreign Ministry source said.
The government insists that its neutral stance at the United Nations on Ukraine-related resolutions does not contradict its alignment with NATO and EU foreign policy, emphasizing that North Macedonia remains committed to its transatlantic partnerships.
EU Accession and Relations with Bulgaria
Regarding constitutional changes demanded by Bulgaria as a condition for North Macedonia’s EU accession talks, Skopje insists on a delayed implementation approach to ensure guarantees and a clear roadmap toward full membership.
“We need predictability in the EU integration process,” a Foreign Ministry official said. “If we amend the constitution now and later face further bilateral disputes, the credibility of both the EU and the region will suffer.”
The government continues to seek a solution that ensures stability, warning that failure to provide clear guarantees could damage EU credibility in North Macedonia and across the Western Balkans. /BV
