Around 270 Bulgarian servicemembers are currently participating in five NATO and three European Union operations, the Ministry of Defence said on Monday during a traditional videoconference with military personnel deployed overseas.
Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov addressed the troops ahead of Bulgaria’s Day of Valour and Armed Forces, celebrated on May 6.
“On the eve of this important national day, I extend my gratitude and appreciation. You fulfill your duties with dedication and strengthen the reputation of the Bulgarian Army and our country on the international stage,” Zapryanov said.
He noted that in today’s complex global environment, the professionalism of Bulgarian forces in multinational missions carries increased significance.
Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov also praised the troops for their role in preserving regional stability.
“Your contribution to peace and security in these volatile areas is vital. The Bulgarian Armed Forces, together with our NATO and EU partners, remain a stabilising force,” Eftimov said.
He added that Bulgaria marks this year’s military holiday with renewed optimism, as long-anticipated efforts to modernize and rearm the Armed Forces are beginning to yield tangible results.
“Increased remuneration for personnel reflects the state’s respect for our responsibilities and motivates us to continue strengthening our capabilities,” Eftimov said, while acknowledging challenges ahead in the rearmament process.
Major General Stanimir Hristov, Commander of the Joint Forces Command, also addressed the deployed contingents.
“I thank the men and women in uniform serving far from home for defending Bulgaria’s national interests and contributing to peace and stability in their respective regions,” Hristov said.
