NATO on Thursday said it had approved the nomination of U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General Alexus G. Grynkewich as the alliance’s next Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR).
Grynkewich, who currently serves as Director for Operations of the Joint Staff in Washington, will succeed U.S. Army General Christopher G. Cavoli following national confirmation procedures, NATO said in a statement.
The transition is expected to take place during a change of command ceremony at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium, later this summer.
The SACEUR position has traditionally been held by a senior U.S. military officer and plays a central role in overseeing NATO military operations across Europe.
