NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska visited Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday and Saturday, holding high-level meetings in Sarajevo and addressing the Sarajevo Security Conference.
Shekerinska met members of the Bosnian Presidency, where she reaffirmed NATO’s support for the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, constitutional order and state-level institutions. She also voiced backing for the EU-led Operation Althea, saying the alliance would not allow a security vacuum to emerge in Bosnia.
During the visit, Shekerinska held talks with the Joint Commission for Defence and Security, Bosnia’s delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, EUFOR Commander Major General Florin-Marian Barbu, international High Representative Christian Schmidt, and Deputy Foreign Minister Josip Brkic.
She also engaged with students participating in a NATO simulation exercise organised by Allied Command Transformation, before delivering a keynote speech at the Sarajevo Security Conference.
“The security and stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina matters to this entire region. It matters to Europe and it certainly matters greatly to NATO,” Shekerinska said. “While war defined this country’s past, it does not define its present and it should not determine its future. A future of peace, prosperity and economic growth – that’s what this country deserves.”
