An image of a mysterious human-like figure circulating widely on social media in Kosovo and dubbed the “Ghost of Pristina” has been confirmed as artificially generated, Kosovo’s media watchdog said on Monday, after the content sparked fear and confusion among some citizens.
The Press Council of Kosovo (Këshilli i Mediave të Shkruara të Kosovës – KMShK) said reports in several media outlets and on social networks claiming that a “ghost” was roaming the streets of Kosovo were inaccurate.
“Reporting in some media about a ‘ghost’ that is ‘walking’ through the streets of Kosovo is incorrect, as it concerns content generated through artificial intelligence,” the council said in a statement.
The phenomenon was discussed earlier on Klan Kosova television, where journalists Enis Reçica and Arta Beqiri said the viral spread of the image had already triggered anxiety among parts of the population. Social media users had claimed the figure was appearing in different locations across the country.
KMShK said it had received numerous complaints from citizens who reported feeling frightened and confused after the publication and sharing of the material.
“Media must exercise caution, verify similar content and refrain from distributing it, as it can cause panic,” the council said.
The virtual character, shared online by accounts using the name “Ghost of Pristina,” appears with a white mask-like face and goat-like legs, creating what the council described as a disturbing image for the public. While the posts have generated significant online engagement, authorities have stressed there is no evidence the figure is real.
