Italian Senate Approves Pension Agreement with The Italian Senate on Tuesday approved a bilateral agreement with Albania on social security contributions, with 129 votes in favor and none against.
The agreement, which allows for the recognition of social security contributions between the two countries, was signed on February 6, 2024, in Rome by Albanian Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Igli Hasani, and Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani.
“Finalizing this agreement provides security and a positive outlook for thousands of workers,” said officials, highlighting that negotiations had been ongoing for 15 years. The agreement ensures that Albanian workers in Italy and Italian workers in Albania retain their pension rights.
- Key Details of the Agreement
- 550,000 Albanian nationals and 4,000 Italian nationals will benefit.
- Recognizes old-age, disability, and family pensions, as well as unemployment benefits and maternity leave.
- Ensures that no working years are lost, as contribution periods will be combined.
Since 2005, Albania has signed social security agreements with multiple countries, including Turkey, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Canada, Switzerland, and North Macedonia. Agreements with Montenegro and Bulgaria are expected to come into force soon, while talks are ongoing with Poland, Serbia, and France.
Negotiations with Slovenia, Spain, Denmark, Moldova, and the United Arab Emirates are also set to begin, with Albania aiming to reach a similar agreement with Greece in the near future.
