Leaders of European Union member states have met in Brussels for their last summit before the end of the Polish Presidency of the EU.
At this summit, leaders discuss a range of topics, from the situation in the Middle East, migration, relations with Ukraine, but also the situation in the Western Balkans.
While a lengthy discussion on the Western Balkans is not expected, European Council President Antonio Costa is expected to address leaders on relations with the region. He will also talk about meetings he had during his visit to the region, which came on the eve of the European Political Community meeting in Tirana in mid-May.
The draft conclusions expected to be adopted at this summit also include a paragraph on the EU’s ties with the region.
“The European Council had an exchange of views on the situation in the Western Balkans and recalls its previous conclusions. The European Union will continue to work closely with the Western Balkans and support their reform efforts on the path towards EU membership. The European Council remains committed to advancing the gradual integration between the European Union and the region, during the enlargement process in a reversible and merit-based manner. The future of the Western Balkans lies in the European Union,” the text of the draft conclusions states.
