EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos will embark on her first official mission to the Western Balkans with a two-day visit to Montenegro on 16-17 January 2025. The visit underscores the EU’s renewed commitment to the region and its determination to accelerate the EU accession process.
During her stay, Commissioner Kos will hold high-level meetings with Montenegro’s leadership, including President Jakov Milatović, Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, and Speaker of Parliament Andrija Mandić. She will address the Parliament and engage with its members, including representatives of the opposition, highlighting Montenegro’s progress as the most advanced candidate in EU accession negotiations.
“This visit is a testament to the EU’s recognition of Montenegro’s achievements in the accession process. We encourage Montenegro to maintain its momentum and accelerate the necessary reforms, as enlargement remains a merit-based process,” Commissioner Kos stated ahead of her visit.
The Commissioner’s agenda also includes visits to EU-funded projects, discussions with civil society representatives, and engagements with local and regional authorities in Bar. Additionally, she will visit the historic city of Cetinje, where she will offer condolences on behalf of the European Commission for the tragic shooting that claimed 13 lives.
This visit signals the EU’s continued support for Montenegro and its commitment to fostering stability, development, and integration within the Western Balkans. /BV
