Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday welcomed a 25-year high in new job positions, citing data from the latest ERGANI employment system report as evidence of his government’s successful economic policies.

“There is no greater social injustice than unemployment and the inequalities it creates,” Mitsotakis said in a post on social media. “That is why I welcomed with great satisfaction the data from the latest ERGANI system report.”

He said the government’s core target since taking office in 2019 – to spur investment and employment – is now becoming a reality. “Obviously, this is not something that happens on its own or on autopilot, but rather the result of the policies we are implementing in the economy and the labour market,” he noted.

Mitsotakis credited the rise in employment to reductions in taxes and social insurance contributions, alongside incentives for investment and efforts to cut red tape. He also pointed to active employment and training policies, particularly aimed at women, youth, persons with disabilities, and retirees seeking work.

“This improvement is a collective achievement. Greece is making progress in very turbulent times, which are testing even larger and stronger economies than ours,” he said.

The prime minister added that the quality of employment has also improved. “Three out of four workers today are in full-time positions – a 10-point increase from 2019, when part-time roles were far more common.”

Concluding, Mitsotakis underlined his administration’s commitment to raising wages and protecting workers: “Together with the digital labour card, which protects 1.9 million workers from undeclared or underreported employment, we are creating – day by day – a fairer and better-paid labour market. Our goal is a minimum wage of 950 euros and an average salary of 1,500 euros by 2027. We said it, and we’re doing it.”
