Filming has begun on Leaving Copacabana, the latest film by acclaimed Balkan director Milcho Manchevski, a Golden Lion winner and North Macedonia’s first Oscar-nominated filmmaker.
The drama is a co-production involving North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Albania, Italy and the United Kingdom. Albania is participating through the Tirana Film Institute, marking its second collaboration with Manchevski and Banana Film.
Leaving Copacabana tells the story of a brother and sister with layered, complex personalities navigating personal and societal struggles in a sharply polarized society divided between the wealthy and the vulnerable.
The cast includes Sara Klimoska, Filip Trajković, Petar Mirčevski, Sonja Mihajlova and Dejan Lilić.
Manchevski, one of the most celebrated filmmakers in the Balkans with more than 50 international awards, previously premiered his film Kaymak at the Tirana International Film Festival (TIFF) two years ago.
