Masked gunmen opened fire on a Serbian police patrol Thursday afternoon in the Ground Safety Zone near Serbia’s border with Kosovo, local media reported, citing unofficial information.

The incident occurred around 1500 local time near the village of Madljika, in southern Serbia, close to the boundary line with Kosovo. According to the reports, the assailants placed obstacles on a local road and fired around 10 shots from firearms at officers who had encountered the blockade.

No police officers were injured in the shooting, the reports said.

Several Serbian media outlets described the masked attackers as ethnic Albanians, though no official confirmation of their identity was immediately available.

Special intervention units were dispatched from a nearby base in Mrče to secure the area.

Serbia’s Interior Ministry did not immediately issue a statement. The Ground Safety Zone, established after the 1999 Kosovo conflict, remains a sensitive area along the border.
