Bosnia and Herzegovina prosecutors have filed an indictment against Dario Ristić, a Bosnian national accused of joining the Russian army and fighting in Ukraine, local media reported on Friday.

The indictment has been sent to the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina for confirmation, according to the report.

Prosecutors allege that Ristić joined Russian forces in November 2023, an act that constitutes a criminal offence under Bosnian law, which prohibits citizens from participating in foreign military or paramilitary formations. Ristić lost a leg while fighting in Ukraine and has since obtained Russian citizenship.

Ristić, who is from the northern Bosnian town of Modriča, was arrested upon his return to Bosnia at Sarajevo airport in September 2025. He has said he returned voluntarily, aware that authorities were searching for him.

A court initially ordered him into one month of detention, after which he was released into house arrest in mid-October.

Ristić’s defence has previously told that he plans to enter a plea agreement and admit guilt to the charge of joining a foreign military force.

According to the Bosnian law, prison sentences ranging from three months to 10 years for joining foreign armed formations, depending on the circumstances of the case.

Ristić had posted updates about his activities in Ukraine on the Russian social media platform VKontakte and continued to do so on TikTok after returning to Bosnia.

If confirmed, the case would become only the second prosecution in Bosnia related to fighting in Ukraine. In an earlier case, a Bosnian citizen accused of fighting alongside Russian forces in 2015 was acquitted due to insufficient evidence.

Security sources estimate that around 20 Bosnian citizens have joined the Russian army since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
