The Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina (CIK) on Monday updated preliminary results from Republika Srpska’s snap presidential election, showing ruling-party candidate Siniša Karan maintaining a narrow lead over opposition challenger Branko Blanuša.

With more than 98% of polling stations processed, CIK data show Karan of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) winning between 50% and 51% of the vote, while Blanuša of the Serb Democratic Party (SDS) stands at about 48%. Several outlets reported the gap at fewer than 9,000 votes – a margin comparable to the number of invalid ballots recorded.

The SDS rejected the results, alleging what it called “large-scale theft” of votes and demanding repeat elections in several municipalities, including Doboj, Zvornik and Laktaši. Several opposition officials accused SNSD of bringing supporters from Serbia to influence the outcome, claims the ruling party denies.

SNSD leader Milorad Dodik declared victory on Sunday night, appearing at celebrations in Banja Luka where party supporters paraded with flags and cars. Dodik said voters had given the entity “two Dodiks”, referring to Karan as his chosen successor. Karan said the result showed voters had rejected “foreign interference”.

Turnout was at a historic low, according to local media.

International and local observers have not yet issued final assessments. CIK said final results will be released after all complaints are reviewed.
