The Balkans, a region rich in natural beauty and hidden treasures, is home to some of Europe’s most stunning waterfalls. From turquoise cascades nestled in pristine forests to powerful drops near ancient villages, these natural wonders are must-see destinations. Here are ten of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Balkans:

1. Kravica Waterfall – Bosnia and Herzegovina
Often called the “Little Niagara,” Kravica is a 25-meter-high spectacle on the Trebižat River. Surrounded by lush greenery, it forms a perfect natural swimming pool during the summer.

2. Plitvice Waterfalls – Croatia
Located in Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, these iconic waterfalls connect 16 turquoise lakes through hundreds of cascades. Wooden pathways guide visitors through this fairytale-like scenery.

3. Grunas Waterfall – Albania
Situated in Theth National Park, Grunas is a 30-meter-high waterfall tumbling down dramatic cliffs. The surrounding Albanian Alps provide a stunning backdrop for nature and hiking lovers.

4. Skakavac Waterfall – Bosnia and Herzegovina
Just outside Sarajevo, Skakavac (meaning “grasshopper”) drops 98 meters, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in the Balkans. The hike to the site offers peaceful trails and breathtaking views.

5. Mirusha Waterfalls – Kosovo
A series of 16 waterfalls and beautiful lakes, the Mirusha Canyon is a hidden paradise in central Kosovo. Each waterfall pours into a crystal-clear natural pool, forming a dazzling staircase of water in the summer.

6. Kaluđerski Skokovi – Montenegro
Located near the Tara River Canyon, these “Monk’s Jumps” are lesser-known but truly impressive waterfalls—perfect for travelers seeking untouched and wild natural experiences.

7. Bigar Waterfall – Romania
Though Romania lies slightly outside the traditional Balkan region, Bigar near the Serbian border is too beautiful to omit. Known for its moss-covered rock and symmetrical flow, it’s considered one of the most unique waterfalls in the world.

8. Korab Waterfall – North Macedonia
At over 130 meters, this is the tallest waterfall in the Balkans. Located on Mount Korab, North Macedonia’s highest peak, this seasonal waterfall (best viewed in spring) is a reward for daring mountain trekkers.

9. Jelovarnik Waterfall – Serbia
Hidden in Kopaonik National Park, Jelovarnik is a 71-meter waterfall surrounded by dense pine forest. It’s Serbia’s second-highest waterfall and a true natural gem waiting to be discovered.

10. Koznitsa Waterfall – Bulgaria
Located near the town of Vratsa in Bulgaria, Koznitsa Waterfall is a hidden gem in the Stara Planina mountain range. With an elegant flow dropping around 20 meters, it’s especially beautiful in spring and early summer when water levels are higher. Surrounded by untouched nature and peaceful hiking trails, it’s an ideal spot for those seeking serenity and raw natural beauty.
